Starling Instructions

What’s in the Box?

With your Starling unit you’ll receive:

  1. One charging dock
  2. One charging cable
  3. One plug
  4. One clip attachment:

Compatibility

The Starling has been designed to be compatible with the iPhone 5S and newer generations, as well as iPads (second generation and up).

The Starling is compatible with iOS Version 9.0+

Your Starling’s First Day

Step 1:

We’re so excited that you’ve received your Starling! Once you’ve opened the box, go ahead and take out the Starling device, the charging dock, the charging cable, and the wall plug. Charge your Starling by plugging the charging cable into the USB port in your supplied wall plug, and plugging the other end into the port on the back of the charging dock. You can also plug the charging cable into a laptop/computer if a wall outlet is not readily available. Once the Starling is placed into the dock, the light on the Starling will turn dim red if it is properly charging.

Step 2:

Download the Starling App from the App Store onto your smartphone and turn your bluetooth compatibility on. This can be done by going to the “Settings” app on your phone and changing the bluetooth setting from “off” to “on”.

Step 3:

Open up the app and create an account by filling in your details to personalize the Starling. Once you have done this, the screen will prompt you to charge your Starling. Your Starling will automatically turn on once it has enough charge. To check if the Starling is on, press the button once. If the device is on, you will see a series of orange and green flashes. If you press the button and nothing happens, then the device is off and should be turned on. You can turn your Starling on by pressing and holding the button on the bottom of the device for 5 seconds (to check if your Starling is already on, push the button once. When the device turns on, you will see rainbow lights flashing on your Starling. If the device is turned on, charged and your bluetooth is on, a blue light will appear on your device indicating that the Starling has paired to your smartphone.

Step 4:

Attach the Starling to your child and start talking!

Turning Your Starling On & Off

To turn your Starling on, press the button for approximately five seconds. You’ll see a rainbow light pattern appear once the Starling has turned on. As soon as it’s on, your Starling will start counting words and you can connect your Starling to the Starling app on your phone.

To turn your Starling off, press the button for approximately five seconds. You’ll see a red light fade out once the Starling has been successfully turned off. Once off, the Starling won’t count words, and you won’t be able to connect it to your phone. But don’t worry – you definitely won’t lose any of your data!

Button Presses & Light Animations

Button Presses:

Single Click – Clicking the button once allows you to see the status of your daily goal. After pressing the button, you’ll see the light on the Starling flash four times. This pattern represents how far along you are in your goal:

Short Hold (Around 3 Seconds) – If your Starling is NOT in ‘Auto Sync Mode’, holding the button on your Starling for three seconds causes your Starling unit to advertise for 30 seconds so that it can connect to your phone. You’ll see a blue light begin to fade in and out, and once your Starling has connected successfully to your phone, that light will turn solid blue for two seconds and then turn off. If your Starling is already in ‘Auto Sync Mode’, this button press won’t do anything.

Long Hold (Around 5 Seconds) – Pressing the button on your Starling for approximately five seconds will turn your Starling on or off.

Light Meanings:

Dim Red (while your Starling is in the charging dock): Your Starling is charging

Red: Your battery is low or your Starling unit is turning off. If the battery on your Starling is low, you’ll see a red light flash three times.

Dim Green (while your Starling is in the charging dock): Your Starling is fully charged

Orange and Green: Orange and Green lights are associated with your daily word goal. After a single button click, you’ll see the Starling light flash four times.

Your Daily Word Goal

Just as a step counter encourages you walk a certain number of steps each day, the Starling encourages you to speak a certain number of words each day to your child. The daily goal is there to encourage and reward you for engaging with your little one each day – it’s not meant to become another chore on a list!

The Starling comes with a default word goal. You can change your specific word goal or check your current progress in the Starling app.

Bluetooth Connectivity

Please Note: We recommend syncing your Starling as often as possible to avoid data loss. Your Starling is only capable of storing a few days of data.

Proximity:

Your Starling communicates with your smartphone via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Bluetooth connectivity has a limited range, so remember that your phone needs to be in the general area (within 10-12 feet) of the Starling in order for the two to connect. Once successfully connected to your phone during set-up, the light on the Starling will turn blue for two seconds.

Auto-Sync On:

If your Starling is in ‘Auto-Sync’ mode, it will connect to your phone any time the Starling is turned on and transfer recorded data continuously to your phone. When you open the mobile app, you will see the light on the Starling flash blue, indicating that the device is connecting and reporting to your phone.

Auto-Sync Off:

If your Starling has auto-sync turned off, it will only sync with the app when the Starling is placed in the charging dock or following a three second button hold. After holding the button for three seconds, the Starling will advertise to communicate with your phone for 30 seconds. While advertising, a blue light will fade in and out until it is connected to your phone. Please note that your Bluetooth must be turned on in order for the Starling to communicate with your phone.

Battery & Charging

Your Starling contains a rechargeable battery. With normal use, your Starling should last 1-3 days before it needs to be charged, however we recommend you leave your charging dock in your child’s room and charge it every night while he/she is sleeping. The expected battery life of your Starling may change as we add additional features through software updates.

To charge your Starling, take it out of your attachment and place it in the charging dock. Plug the charging cable into the USB port on wall adapter, and plug the other end into the port on the back of the charging dock.

While in the charging dock and charging, you will see the LED light on the device glow red. Once it is fully charged, it will turn green. A full charge takes approximately 1.5 hours.

Checking your Starling’s battery status:

Starling App. You can check the level of your battery by connecting the Starling to your phone’s companion app and looking at the battery indicator at the top of the screen. If your battery is low (below 25%), we’ll notify you in your Starling app and send you a push notification letting you know that it’s time to charge your Starling.

Starling Low Battery Light Indicator. You’ll also be able to tell if your Starling battery is low on the Starling unit itself. Press the button once – at first you will see green and orange flashes indicating your goal status. If the battery is low, a red light will then pulse on and off for a few seconds. If there is no red flash, you still have plenty of charge left!

Starling Wear & Care

We know that all parents and children are different so we have provided two clip attachments for your Starling. Choose the one that suits you and your child best.

The Starling is meant to be worn by your child. As with all wearable technology, accuracy is affected by location of wear. For best results, we recommend attaching the Starling directly to your child’s clothing, on the front of his/her shirt or belt loop. Ideally, the Starling should go on the outermost layer of your child’s clothing so that it’s not blocked by a jacket or sweater.

If that is not possible, you may attach it to your child’s carrier (car seat, high chair, etc.). Whichever location you prefer, keep in mind that the Starling counts most accurately when it is closest to the child.

We recommend you remove the Starling from any clothing while your child is sleeping and reattach it after your child wakes up.

Your Starling is water-resistant and will withstand some splashes or drool. However, the Starling is not designed to be worn when swimming or bathing and we do not recommend immersing it in water. Likewise, the Starling has been designed to exceed the US Government’s choke threshold, so it is safe for your child, but we do not recommend you let your child chew on the Starling.

Cleaning your Starling:

To clean your Starling, attachments, and charging dock, use only a damp cloth to gently wipe down. Do not use any type of cleaning product or solvent as this will wear away the plastic and could damage your Starling. Do not fully submerge your Starling in water or place it in the washing machine. Sometimes, residue buildup on the charging ports of the Starling will prevent it from charging while in the base station. Wiping the back of the Starling down with a damp cloth should fix the issue.

Updating Your Starling

At some point, we may have to update the Starling’s software. In order to update the software, go to your mobile app and click on your child’s Starling. Under “Starling Settings” you can select your child’s Starling, which will take you to a screen where you will see a “Tech Specs,” heading. If there’s an update available, it will show up as an option and appear next to the firmware version. If you click on the update it will begin to download on your app. While this is happening, the light on your Starling will turn yellow. While the software is updating, your device will NOT count words. However, the update should only take around 5 minutes, so you won’t lose too many words!
