The best food for a growing brain? Words.

While you may not remember it, you had a much easier time learning language as a baby. Because so much brain growth happens before a child turns 3, your parents set your trajectory in life long before you set foot in a classroom. Even though your baby won’t remember it, you are the most important factor in their language development – your words will shape your child’s future!

First Words Are Just The First Step

The research is clear: children learn language based on how much their parents talk to them. Early talkers who start out ahead tend to stay ahead. Some 20-month-olds talk more than children twice their age. The sooner a child talks, the easier it is for parents to talk back, leading to even faster language development and a larger vocabulary.

Small Talk, Big Gains

Even though you don’t remember it, your trajectory was set during the earliest years of your life. Studies show that more words heard from birth to age 4 means a child will talk earlier and read sooner. This, in turn, leads to better grades in school, more college scholarship money, and even a better job one day. All from a little small talk!

What Would The Starling Say About You?

Most parents overestimate how much they talk to their children, and since most parent-child interaction happens within a home, it’s nearly impossible for families to compare themselves to their peers. Thirty years of research, however, suggests that some parents talk dramatically more than others with profound lifelong benefits for their children.
